Since completing the Ribbon Box Braid Tutorial I have been meaning to add this cute alternative. This Mini Circle Lei Bag Charm Tutorial is the same difficulty as the other tutorial but there is a twist!
Mini Circle Lei Bag Charm
What you will need:
2 x 3m of 6mm grosgrain ribbon
Key Ring
Glue
Needle and matching thread
Kits are available in a range of colours. Buy lei bag charm kits here.
Find the centre of both pieces of ribbon. Using the centre points lay the 2 pieces across each other to form a cross.
Take the top blue ribbon and fold it towards the bottom. Leave a little bit of space to create a small loop.
Take the right yellow ribbon fold it to the other side.
Now take the bottom blue ribbon (the one that has not moved yet) and fold it towards the top.
Take the left yellow ribbon (the one that has not moved yet) and fold it over the second blue ribbon and pass it through the first loop you created with blue ribbon. Gently pull the yellow ribbon through so there is a little bit of slack left.
Now slowly pull each of the ribbons a little at a time until they all come together and form a square. Making sure that all the ribbons are pulled tightly but not so tight as to buckle the ribbon.
You have created the beginning of a twisted box braid.
Take the bottom blue ribbon and fold it across on an angle between the yellow and blue ribbons. Leave a little ribbon to form a loop.
Take the left yellow ribbon and fold it across on an angle between the blue and yellow ribbons.
Now take the top blue ribbon and fold it across parallel to the other blue ribbon.
Take the right yellow ribbon and fold it across to the left. Over the blue ribbon and then through the loop you created with the first blue ribbon.
Pull all ribbons gently to lock them in place.
Continue starting with the ribbon closest to you (bottom of the picture) and continue each layer of the braid.
Continue repeating until you have approximately 12cm of box braid.
Separate the ribbons into two groups. One strand of each colour per group.
Take one group and thread them through the bottom loops created when you began weaving.
Take the other group and thread in the opposite direction.
Tie a knot. Add a little glue between the two side and hold together until the glue sets.
Thread the keychain to on one pair of ribbons and tie another knot.
Divide the ribbons into 2 (either one of each colour or the same colours together and tie a bow). At the end of the tutorial in this link you will find a tutorial on how to tie a bow and have the two ends facing down.
If you decide to do this bow make sure the box braid is facing away from you otherwise the bow will be upside down. Add a few stitches with the needle and thread to secure the bow. You can also add a little glue if you wish.
